Sealing & Maintenance of Cement Tiles
Cement tiles should be sealed to protect them from moisture and staining. We recommend sealers from EcoProtec, available to order together with your tiles.
Over time, cement tiles develop a natural patina that adds depth and character. With gentle cleaning and occasional re-sealing when needed, they will age beautifully for many years.
For daily care, use a neutral, colourless soap or a specialist cleaner such as Natural Stone & Porcelain Aftercare Cleaner (available through Marrakech Design).
Avoid products containing bleach or acids, as these may damage the surface. Even when sealed, cement tiles remain sensitive to acidic liquids. Wipe away spills from coffee, citrus, vinegar, and similar substances as soon as possible to prevent staining.
Natural Finish Stone Sealer
Cement tiles that are being installed in any kind of wet area (including outdoor installation) require sealing with Natural Finish Stone Sealer (Step 1), prior and after grouting.
Only sealing with Step 1 is required for tiles that are installed in shower areas.

A natural finish water based impregnating sealer. Minimal change to surface character. Helps protect against staining. The treated stone strongly repels water, oil and grease. This product allows surfaces to breathe.
This products should be applied until the tiles are fully saturated, normally 1-3 coats. Additional coats of Natural Finish Stone Sealer should be applied once a year or when needed.

Maintenance
Maintain your handmade cement tiles with the right care products. For weekly cleaning, we recommend a natural floor soap such as Natural Stone & Porcelain Aftercare Cleaner.
Avoid using acidic cleaning agents, as these can damage the tiles. This includes bleach, vinegar, epoxy grout removers, citrus-based soaps, solvent cleaners, and similar products.

Natural Stone & Porcelain Aftercare Cleaner
High quality every day after care floor wash that is suitable for interior and exterior use.
A gentle cleaner especially formulated to clean natural stone, porcelain and ceramic without damaging the grout or tile, leaving the floor with a fresh clean fragrance. Suitable for use on both sealed, un-sealed, polished and unpolished surfaces.

Frequently asked questions
Contrary to ceramic tiles, cement tiles are not exposed to firing but gain their strength from curing. The pigment layer is about 3-4 mm which gives the tiles a long lifespan. This means that it’s possible to sand the surface of the tiles if stains have accrued.
Scrub the tiles with a fine-grained (400+ grit) sandpaper with mild soap and water. Sand the tiles in a small spaces at the time and try in a less visible area before you move on to the whole area and sand the tiles gently. Be sure to flush the tiles will lots of clean water thereafter so that no soap remains. In extreme cases it can help to sand the tiles together with Stone & Tile Intensive cleaner.
Allow the tiles to dry over night before applying sealer until the tiles are fully saturated.
