Charlotte von der Lancken’s Fold & Paths collection for Marrakech Design was released in 2019.
The Fold pattern is inspired by the infinity symbol and originates from a flattened Möbius strip shaped into a perfect hexagon. The Möbius strip — a mathematical discovery of a one-sided surface — carries strong symbolic associations with infinity, continuity, and movement, qualities that are reflected in the design of these handmade cement tiles.
The Paths pattern creates an ever-changing maze of interconnected lines. No matter how the tiles are rotated, the paths continue to connect, forming new irregular compositions and giving the collection endless possibilities for unique layouts and patterns.
Charlotte von der Lancken’s second collection for Marrakech Design, Ma & Stripe, was released in 2021.
Ma is a plain colored tile where the spaces in between form a pattern due to the shape of the tile. Color and material determine the overall impression and the joints between the tiles ensure the dynamics. The Ma cement tile is eye-catching and simple at the same time. The name Ma comes from Japan and is an expression of the space between two things, but not as a dividing void, but as a connection.
For Stripe, Charlotte von der Lancken worked systematically with sequences of color, inspired by the tonal transitions of a rainbow. The design was then divided into eight different panels that can be arranged as simple stripes or combined into endless variations of colors, checks, and graphic patterns.
